On March 25 2026, I sat down at a piano in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and improvised a live piece over the GW150914 gravitational wave signal.
The bed track is the raw LIGO data, processed from gwosc.org under CC BY 4.0. Stretched 60 times using the Paulstretch algorithm – 60, in honour of Star Trek’s 60th anniversary – and pitched down two octaves to bring it into human hearing range. The piano improvisation was recorded in one unrehearsed take.
I called it SIGNAL.
The universe sent the most powerful signal ever recorded. It felt like the right thing to send something back.
Thank you to the GWOSC team for making the data available. And to Jonah Kanner for the invitation to share it here.
